Summary
Ethinylestradiol is a weak CYP1A2 inhibitor, and eltrombopag is partly cleared by CYP1A2. A small rise in eltrombopag exposure is possible. Estrogens also raise thrombotic risk, which adds to the thrombotic risk of eltrombopag.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eltrombopag and Ethinylestradiol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Ethinylestradiol may inhibit CYP1A2-mediated eltrombopag metabolism.
What to do
Monitor platelet counts and liver tests. Consider non-estrogen contraception in patients with additional thrombotic risk factors.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
