Summary
ACE inhibitors may enhance the glucose-lowering effect of sulfonylureas and occasionally precipitate hypoglycemia. The thiazide component can raise glucose and partly counteract this, so glycemic control may change in either direction.
What this interaction means in plain words
Enalapril-hydrochlorothiazide and Glibenclamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Enalapril-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Glibenclamide belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
ACE inhibition may increase insulin sensitivity, while thiazides may reduce glucose tolerance.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose when starting, stopping or adjusting the combination. Reduce the glyburide dose if hypoglycemia occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
