Summary
Enoxaparin can suppress aldosterone secretion and, together with an angiotensin receptor blocker, may raise serum potassium. The risk is greater in renal impairment, diabetes or prolonged treatment, and the thiazide partly offsets it.
What this interaction means in plain words
Enoxaparin and Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Enoxaparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced suppression of adrenal aldosterone synthesis adds to angiotensin receptor blockade, reducing renal potassium excretion.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and renal function, particularly with prolonged enoxaparin therapy or renal impairment. Manage hyperkalemia if it develops and review the need for either drug.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
