Summary
Heparins, including enoxaparin, can suppress aldosterone secretion and cause hyperkalemia. Combined with valsartan the risk is additive, particularly in renal impairment, diabetes or with prolonged use.
What this interaction means in plain words
Enoxaparin and Valsartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Enoxaparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive suppression of aldosterone effects leads to reduced renal potassium excretion.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and renal function, especially if enoxaparin is given for more than a few days.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
