Summary
Flurbiprofen can blunt the blood pressure lowering effect of an ARB and thiazide combination. In combination with a diuretic and an ARB it also raises the risk of acute kidney injury, especially in elderly or volume-depleted patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide and Flurbiprofen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Flurbiprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis reduces renal blood flow and sodium excretion, which opposes antihypertensive effects and impairs glomerular perfusion when angiotensin II blockade and diuresis are also present.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium after starting or changing the NSAID, and ensure adequate hydration. Use the lowest effective NSAID dose for the shortest time, or choose paracetamol where suitable.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
