Summary
Both thiazide diuretics and long-acting beta-agonists can lower serum potassium. Together they may cause clinically significant hypokalemia and, rarely, ECG changes or arrhythmias, especially at high doses or with hypoxia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide and Salmeterol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Salmeterol belongs to Respiratory.
Why it happens
Beta-2 stimulation shifts potassium into cells while the thiazide increases renal potassium excretion, producing additive hypokalemia.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium in patients with risk factors such as severe asthma or COPD, or those taking higher doses. Replace potassium as needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
