Summary
Voxelotor inhibits CYP3A4 in vitro and increases exposure to sensitive CYP3A4 substrates. Etoposide is partly CYP3A4-metabolised, so levels may rise modestly, but etoposide is not a sensitive substrate and the clinical effect is uncertain.
What this interaction means in plain words
Etoposide and Voxelotor can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Etoposide belongs to Oncology; Voxelotor belongs to Miscellaneous.
Why it happens
Voxelotor inhibits CYP3A4, which may reduce the metabolism of etoposide.
What to do
Monitor blood counts and signs of etoposide toxicity during co-administration. Reduce the etoposide dose if marked myelosuppression occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
