Summary

Taking two NSAIDs together is therapeutic duplication. It raises the risk of GI ulceration and bleeding, acute kidney injury, fluid retention, hypertension, and cardiovascular thrombotic events without adding analgesic benefit.

What this interaction means in plain words

Etoricoxib and Meloxicam can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Etoricoxib belongs to Musculoskeletal; Meloxicam belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Pharmacodynamic. Both drugs inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX-2 preferential and COX-2 selective, respectively), so their GI, renal, and cardiovascular toxicities are additive.

What to do

Avoid concomitant use. Choose a single NSAID at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
