Summary

Probenecid can raise fenoprofen plasma concentrations, increasing the risk of NSAID adverse effects such as gastrointestinal and renal toxicity. Fenoprofen may also modestly affect probenecid handling, and the uricosuric effect can be blunted by salicylates but is less affected by most other NSAIDs.

What this interaction means in plain words

Fenoprofen and Probenecid can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Fenoprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Probenecid belongs to Genitourinary.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Probenecid inhibits renal tubular organic anion transport and glucuronidation, reducing fenoprofen clearance.

What to do

Consider a lower fenoprofen dose and monitor for NSAID adverse effects such as dyspepsia, GI bleeding and renal dysfunction.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
