Summary
Flurbiprofen can blunt the antihypertensive effect of valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide. In combination with an ARB and diuretic, it increases the risk of acute kidney injury and hyperkalemia, especially in elderly or volume-depleted patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Flurbiprofen and Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Flurbiprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis reduces renal perfusion and sodium excretion, compounding ARB and diuretic effects on glomerular filtration.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, creatinine and potassium, and maintain hydration. Use the lowest effective flurbiprofen dose for the shortest time or choose an alternative analgesic.
What to ask your pharmacist
