Summary
Flurbiprofen can reduce the blood pressure lowering effect of valsartan. In older, volume-depleted or renally impaired patients the combination can cause acute kidney injury and hyperkalemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Flurbiprofen and Valsartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Flurbiprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of vasodilatory renal prostaglandins reduces glomerular perfusion while angiotensin receptor blockade removes efferent arteriolar tone, impairing filtration and potassium excretion.
What to do
Maintain hydration and monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium after starting the NSAID and periodically thereafter. Avoid or minimise NSAID use in high-risk patients.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
