Summary
Valsartan may inhibit hepatic uptake transporters, but fluvastatin is eliminated mainly by CYP2C9 and is much less dependent on OATP1B1 than other statins. Any rise in fluvastatin exposure or myopathy risk is not well established.
What this interaction means in plain words
Fluvastatin and Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Fluvastatin belongs to Cardiovascular; Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Possible weak OATP1B1 inhibition by valsartan could reduce hepatic statin uptake, but this is not clearly demonstrated.
What to do
No dose adjustment is needed. Advise patients to report unexplained muscle pain or weakness.
