Summary
Both drugs are cleared renally with a tubular secretion component, so competition may modestly raise ganciclovir levels. NSAIDs can also impair renal function, which further reduces ganciclovir clearance and may increase hematologic and other dose-related toxicity. Seizures have been reported with some imipenem-ganciclovir combinations, but this is not established for ketoprofen.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ganciclovir and Ketoprofen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ganciclovir belongs to Anti Virals; Ketoprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Competition for renal tubular secretion plus NSAID-related reduction in renal function lowers ganciclovir clearance.
What to do
Monitor renal function and blood counts during combined use, and adjust the ganciclovir dose to creatinine clearance. Avoid the NSAID in patients with reduced renal function where possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?

Frequently asked questions
Can I take Ganciclovir with Ketoprofen?
MediHelp rates the interaction as moderate. Ganciclovir and Ketoprofen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken. Both drugs are cleared renally with a tubular secretion component, so competition may modestly raise ganciclovir levels. Seizures have been reported with some imipenem-ganciclovir combinations, but this is not established for ketoprofen.
How serious is the interaction between Ganciclovir and Ketoprofen?
MediHelp rates it moderate, on a four-level scale (minor, moderate, major, contraindicated) based on published labels and references. What to do, in brief: Monitor renal function and blood counts during combined use, and adjust the ganciclovir dose to creatinine clearance. Avoid the NSAID in patients with reduced renal function where possible.
