Summary
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors have been associated with enhanced glucose-lowering in patients on antidiabetic drugs. Adding rasagiline to glipizide-metformin may therefore increase the risk of hypoglycemia, mainly through the sulfonylurea component.
What this interaction means in plain words
Glipizide-metformin and Rasagiline have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Glipizide-metformin belongs to Endocrine; Rasagiline belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
The mechanism is not well established; MAO inhibition may alter glucose homeostasis and enhance insulin-mediated effects.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose when rasagiline is started or stopped. Reduce the glipizide dose if hypoglycemia occurs.
