Summary
Beta-blockers may impair recovery from hypoglycemia and mask adrenergic warning symptoms such as tremor and palpitations. Pindolol has intrinsic sympathomimetic activity, so the effect is somewhat less than with other nonselective agents, but sweating is still preserved and tachycardia may be blunted.
What this interaction means in plain words
Glyburide and Pindolol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Beta-adrenergic blockade blunts the counter-regulatory response to hypoglycemia and masks its symptoms.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose more often and educate patients that sweating may be the main warning sign. Consider a cardioselective beta-blocker if clinically appropriate.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
