Summary

Henbane contains hyoscyamine and scopolamine, which are potent antimuscarinic alkaloids. Together with maprotiline, anticholinergic effects may be considerably increased, causing delirium, tachycardia, urinary retention and hyperthermia.

What this interaction means in plain words

Henbane and Maprotiline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive antimuscarinic activity from tropane alkaloids and the anticholinergic tricyclic-like antidepressant.

What to do

Avoid combining where possible, since herbal alkaloid content is variable. If used, monitor for anticholinergic toxicity including confusion, tachycardia and urinary retention.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
