Summary
NSAIDs can blunt the antihypertensive effect of olmesartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Together with an ARB and a diuretic, an NSAID increases the risk of acute kidney injury, especially in elderly or volume-depleted patients, and may cause hyperkalemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrochlorothiazide-olmesartan and Oxaprozin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Hydrochlorothiazide-olmesartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Oxaprozin belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandins reduces renal perfusion and sodium excretion, opposing antihypertensive effects and adding to hemodynamic renal risk.
What to do
Use the lowest effective NSAID dose for the shortest time and ensure adequate hydration. Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium, particularly at the start of therapy.
What to ask your pharmacist
