Summary
Both hydroxyzine and high doses of albuterol can prolong the QT interval or cause hypokalemia, which could increase arrhythmia risk in susceptible patients. Albuterol may cause stimulation that partly offsets hydroxyzine sedation.
What this interaction means in plain words
Albuterol and Hydroxyzine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation, with beta-agonist induced hypokalemia contributing, plus opposing CNS effects.
What to do
Check potassium and consider an ECG in patients with other QT risk factors, cardiac disease or high doses of albuterol. Use the lowest effective hydroxyzine dose.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
