Summary

Indapamide tends to lower serum potassium while irbesartan tends to raise it, so the net effect on potassium is unpredictable. The combination is widely used for hypertension, and the ARB may partly offset diuretic-induced hypokalemia, but additive blood pressure lowering and volume depletion can occur, especially at initiation.

What this interaction means in plain words

Indapamide and Irbesartan have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Indapamide belongs to Cardiovascular; Irbesartan belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Opposing effects on potassium (thiazide-like kaliuresis versus ARB-mediated aldosterone blockade) plus additive hypotensive and volume-depleting effects.

What to do

Check serum potassium, creatinine and blood pressure after starting or changing doses. No routine dose change is needed if values remain stable.
