Summary
Sertraline has a small QT-prolonging effect, and indapamide-induced hypokalemia or hypomagnesemia can increase arrhythmia risk. Sertraline may also contribute to hyponatremia, which is additive with the diuretic, especially in older adults.
What this interaction means in plain words
Indapamide and Sertraline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Indapamide belongs to Cardiovascular; Sertraline belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Electrolyte depletion from indapamide reduces repolarization reserve, adding to the mild QT effect of sertraline; both can lower sodium.
What to do
Monitor sodium, potassium and magnesium, particularly in older patients and in the first weeks of therapy. Obtain an ECG if other QT-prolonging factors are present.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
