Summary
Iodinated contrast media can cause contrast-associated acute kidney injury, and vancomycin is also nephrotoxic. Giving both increases the risk of renal impairment, especially in patients with existing kidney disease, dehydration or other nephrotoxins.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ioversol and Vancomycin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive nephrotoxicity through contrast-induced tubular injury and vancomycin tubular toxicity.
What to do
Ensure adequate hydration and monitor serum creatinine for several days after contrast. Adjust vancomycin dosing by trough or AUC levels and renal function.
