Summary
Bowel preparations cause fluid and electrolyte losses and may lead to hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia. Salbutamol also shifts potassium into cells, so the effects on potassium may be additive, which could favor arrhythmia in susceptible patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ipratropium-salbutamol and Sodium sulfate / potassium chloride / magnesium sulfate / polyethylene glycol have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Why it happens
Additive hypokalemia from beta-2 agonist intracellular potassium shift and gastrointestinal electrolyte losses.
What to do
Check electrolytes in patients with cardiac disease or on other potassium-lowering drugs who use frequent salbutamol around bowel preparation. Correct low potassium or magnesium before procedures.
