Summary
Trifluoperazine has some anticholinergic activity that may add to inhaled ipratropium, though systemic ipratropium exposure is low. Phenothiazines can also prolong the QT interval, which may be compounded by salbutamol-induced tachycardia and hypokalemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ipratropium-salbutamol and Trifluoperazine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive anticholinergic effects, plus additive QT-prolonging and hypokalemic effects of salbutamol with the antipsychotic.
What to do
Monitor for anticholinergic adverse effects and review ECG and potassium when high-dose salbutamol is used in patients with cardiac risk factors.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
