Summary
Isoproterenol is a beta-agonist that increases heart rate and can provoke ventricular arrhythmias. In a patient on pimozide, which prolongs the QT interval, tachycardia and hypokalemia from beta stimulation may raise proarrhythmic risk, while the sedation effect is not clinically important.
What this interaction means in plain words
Isoproterenol and Pimozide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Isoproterenol belongs to Respiratory; Pimozide belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Beta-adrenergic stimulation with hypokalemia and tachycardia may add to pimozide-induced QT prolongation.
What to do
Monitor ECG and serum potassium during isoproterenol therapy in patients on pimozide. Correct electrolyte disturbances promptly.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
