Summary
NSAIDs can weaken the antihypertensive action of telmisartan and, together with it, may impair kidney function, particularly in the elderly or volume-depleted. Hyperkalemia is also possible.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ketoprofen and Telmisartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ketoprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Telmisartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
NSAID reduction of vasodilatory renal prostaglandins combined with ARB efferent arteriolar dilation lowers glomerular filtration and favors potassium retention.
What to do
Maintain hydration and monitor creatinine, potassium and blood pressure after starting or changing the NSAID. Avoid in volume-depleted or renally impaired patients where possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
