Summary
Fluoroquinolones carry a risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture, and systemic corticosteroids increase that risk. Triamcinolone injected into or near a tendon or given systemically may further raise the risk, especially in older patients and transplant recipients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Levofloxacin and Triamcinolone acetonide injectable can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive tendon toxicity: fluoroquinolones damage tenocytes and collagen, while corticosteroids impair collagen synthesis and tendon repair.
What to do
Avoid injecting corticosteroid near a tendon during fluoroquinolone therapy where possible and consider a non-quinolone antibiotic in older patients. Instruct the patient to stop levofloxacin and rest the limb at the first sign of tendon pain or swelling.
