Summary

Dronedarone markedly prolongs the QT interval and is contraindicated with other QT-prolonging drugs that can induce torsades de pointes. Adding levofloxacin increases the risk of life-threatening arrhythmia.

What this interaction means in plain words

Dronedarone and Levofloxacin are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Dronedarone belongs to Cardiovascular; Levofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Additive blockade of cardiac potassium channels prolonging ventricular repolarization.

What to do

Do not co-administer; select an antibiotic without QT liability. If a fluoroquinolone is essential, dronedarone must be withheld first.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
  • If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
  • Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
