Summary

Papaveretum contains opium alkaloids including morphine. With MAO inhibitors, opioids can cause serotonin syndrome or marked opioid toxicity such as hypotension, respiratory depression and coma. Linezolid has weak MAO-inhibiting activity.

What this interaction means in plain words

Linezolid and Papaveretum can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

MAO inhibition by linezolid may potentiate serotonergic and CNS-depressant effects of opioids; the exact mechanism is uncertain.

What to do

Use an alternative analgesic where possible. If an opioid is needed, use small titrated doses and monitor blood pressure, respiratory status and signs of serotonin toxicity.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
