Summary

Selegiline is an MAO inhibitor, and at antidepressant transdermal doses it inhibits both MAO-A and MAO-B. Adding linezolid increases risk of serotonin syndrome and hypertensive reactions.

What this interaction means in plain words

Linezolid and Selegiline transdermal are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive MAO inhibition leading to excess serotonin and catecholamines.

What to do

Avoid the combination and use an alternative antibiotic. If linezolid is unavoidable, stop selegiline and monitor blood pressure and for serotonin toxicity.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
  • If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
  • Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
