Summary
Methylphenidate products are contraindicated with MAO inhibitors, and linezolid has MAO-inhibiting activity. Combining them can cause hypertensive crisis because of excess catecholamine accumulation.
What this interaction means in plain words
Linezolid and Serdexmethylphenidate / dexmethylphenidate are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Linezolid inhibits MAO, which impairs catecholamine degradation, while methylphenidate increases synaptic dopamine and norepinephrine.
What to do
Do not give together or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI per labeling. If linezolid is required, hold the stimulant and monitor blood pressure.
What to ask your pharmacist
