Summary
Metronidazole, a related nitroimidazole, has been reported to raise serum lithium concentrations, and tinidazole may behave similarly although this is not well established. Elevated lithium can cause tremor, confusion, gastrointestinal upset and renal injury.
What this interaction means in plain words
Lithium and Tinidazole can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Lithium belongs to Central Nervous System; Tinidazole belongs to Anti Parasitic.
Why it happens
The mechanism is not established; possible reduced renal lithium clearance, extrapolated from metronidazole.
What to do
Check serum lithium and creatinine within several days of starting tinidazole and reduce the lithium dose if levels rise. Advise the patient to report signs of lithium toxicity.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
