Summary
Both drugs can prolong the QT interval, loperamide especially at supratherapeutic doses, and albuterol can also cause hypokalemia and tachycardia. Together they may raise the risk of ventricular arrhythmia, mainly in susceptible patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Albuterol and Loperamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation, with albuterol-induced hypokalemia potentially adding to the risk.
What to do
Use loperamide only at labeled doses, and check potassium and magnesium in patients with other QT risk factors. Obtain an ECG if palpitations or syncope occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
