Summary
Transdermal selegiline at antidepressant doses inhibits MAO, and combining it with a noradrenergic antidepressant can cause hypertensive crisis and serotonin syndrome. Labeling recommends against concurrent use of tricyclic-type antidepressants.
What this interaction means in plain words
Maprotiline and Selegiline transdermal are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
MAO inhibition by selegiline combined with norepinephrine reuptake blockade by maprotiline leads to excess monoamines.
What to do
Do not use together. Allow an adequate washout between the drugs, as specified in the product labeling, when switching.
