Summary

Maprotiline blocks norepinephrine reuptake, and yohimbine is an alpha-2 antagonist that increases noradrenergic outflow. Together they can cause exaggerated sympathetic effects such as hypertension, tachycardia, anxiety and tremor. Maprotiline also lowers the seizure threshold, adding a further risk.

What this interaction means in plain words

Maprotiline and Yohimbine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive noradrenergic stimulation through reuptake inhibition (maprotiline) and presynaptic alpha-2 blockade (yohimbine).

What to do

Avoid the combination where possible, or monitor blood pressure and heart rate and watch for agitation or palpitations. Reduce or stop yohimbine if pressor effects occur.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
