Summary

Procarbazine suppresses immunity, and the MMR vaccine contains live attenuated viruses. Vaccine viruses may disseminate and cause disease in the patient, and protection may not develop.

What this interaction means in plain words

Measles mumps and rubella vaccine live and Procarbazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Immunosuppression allows uncontrolled replication of live attenuated viruses and blunts the immune response.

What to do

Do not give MMR during procarbazine therapy. Defer vaccination until immune function has recovered, generally at least 3 months after treatment.
