Summary
NSAIDs may increase the central nervous system excitatory effects of fluoroquinolones and lower the seizure threshold. Seizures are uncommon but serious, and are more likely with high fluoroquinolone doses, renal impairment or underlying epilepsy.
What this interaction means in plain words
Meclofenamic acid and Ofloxacin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Meclofenamic acid belongs to Musculoskeletal; Ofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Fluoroquinolones antagonise GABA-A receptors, and some NSAIDs may potentiate this effect, increasing neuronal excitability.
What to do
Avoid the combination in patients with seizure disorders or other seizure risk factors, and keep the ofloxacin dose appropriate for renal function. Counsel patients to report tremor, confusion or seizure activity.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
