Summary

NSAIDs reduce renal prostaglandin-dependent blood flow and may slow aminoglycoside clearance, raising streptomycin concentrations. This increases the risk of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity, notably in neonates, preterm infants and renally impaired patients.

What this interaction means in plain words

Meloxicam and Streptomycin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Meloxicam belongs to Musculoskeletal; Streptomycin belongs to Anti Bacterial.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

NSAID-induced reduction in renal perfusion and glomerular filtration decreases aminoglycoside elimination.

What to do

Monitor serum creatinine and streptomycin levels, and adjust the dose to renal function. Avoid the combination in neonates and in patients with renal impairment where possible.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
