Summary
Methyldopa can lower central dopamine synthesis and may reduce the benefit of a dopamine agonist, while both can cause hypotension. The combination may therefore worsen Parkinsonian or restless legs symptoms or cause additive orthostatic hypotension.
What this interaction means in plain words
Methyldopa and Ropinirole can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Methyldopa belongs to Cardiovascular; Ropinirole belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Methyldopa inhibits dopa decarboxylase and acts as a false transmitter, opposing dopaminergic agonism; additive hypotension also occurs.
What to do
Monitor orthostatic blood pressure and symptom control. Consider an alternative antihypertensive if motor symptoms worsen.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
