For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Overview

Severity: Moderate · Evidence level: Low

Additive 5-HT4 agonist effects may increase GI motility leading to diarrhea, abdominal cramping, dehydration, and potential electrolyte disturbances; there is limited evidence for benefit of combined use.

Mechanism of action

Pharmacodynamic: both agents are 5-HT4 receptor agonists that enhance acetylcholine release and accelerate GI transit; no meaningful pharmacokinetic interaction is expected.

Clinical management

Avoid routine coadministration; prefer monotherapy. If combination is considered, use the lowest effective doses and monitor for diarrhea, volume depletion, and electrolytes (especially in older adults or those with renal impairment). Discontinue one agent if significant GI adverse effects occur.
