Summary
Mycophenolate inhibits lymphocyte proliferation and has been associated with reduced antibody responses to pneumococcal and other inactivated vaccines in transplant recipients. The conjugate vaccine is non-live and is still recommended in these patients, although protection may be lower.
What this interaction means in plain words
Mycophenolate and Pneumococcal vaccine 13-valent can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Inhibition of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase limits B- and T-lymphocyte proliferation and so reduces the antibody response.
What to do
Vaccinate as early as possible, ideally before transplantation or before starting therapy. Do not rely on a single dose in highly immunosuppressed patients; follow transplant vaccination guidance.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
