Summary
Yohimbe contains yohimbine, an alpha-2 adrenergic antagonist that raises sympathetic outflow, blood pressure and heart rate. Nadolol, a nonselective beta-blocker, may blunt the tachycardia but leaves alpha-mediated vasoconstriction unopposed, so the antihypertensive effect of nadolol may be reduced.
What this interaction means in plain words
Nadolol and Yohimbe can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic antagonism: yohimbine increases noradrenergic activity through alpha-2 blockade, opposing the blood pressure lowering of beta-blockade.
What to do
Advise patients to avoid yohimbe products while on nadolol. If used, monitor blood pressure and heart rate.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
