Summary

Fluoroquinolones lower the seizure threshold, and salicylates have been proposed to enhance this through effects at GABA receptors. With sulfasalazine, the salicylate load is low, so the risk is largely theoretical.

What this interaction means in plain words

Ofloxacin and Sulphasalazine have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Ofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Sulphasalazine belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Quinolone antagonism of GABA-A receptors, theoretically potentiated by displacement from binding sites; not established for sulfasalazine.

What to do

No routine change needed. Use caution with ofloxacin in patients with seizure history and report any CNS symptoms.
