Summary

NSAIDs can reduce the antihypertensive effect of angiotensin receptor blockers and, together, may impair renal function, especially in elderly, dehydrated or renally impaired patients. Hyperkalemia may also occur.

What this interaction means in plain words

Olmesartan and Oxaprozin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Olmesartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Oxaprozin belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

NSAID inhibition of afferent arteriolar vasodilatory prostaglandins combined with ARB efferent dilation reduces glomerular filtration, and prostaglandin blockade opposes the antihypertensive effect.

What to do

Ensure adequate hydration and monitor serum creatinine, potassium and blood pressure, particularly at initiation and in at-risk patients. Avoid prolonged combination where possible.

What to ask your pharmacist
