Summary

NSAIDs can reduce the antihypertensive effect of angiotensin receptor blockers and together may impair renal function, especially in elderly, volume-depleted or renally impaired patients. Hyperkalemia may also occur.

What this interaction means in plain words

Oxaprozin and Telmisartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Oxaprozin belongs to Musculoskeletal; Telmisartan belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

NSAID blockade of afferent arteriolar vasodilatory prostaglandins combined with ARB efferent dilation reduces glomerular filtration, and prostaglandin inhibition opposes blood pressure lowering.

What to do

Ensure hydration and monitor serum creatinine, potassium and blood pressure, especially at initiation. Avoid prolonged combined use where possible.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
