Summary
Safinamide is an MAO-B inhibitor, and with phenelzine the total MAO inhibition can become nonselective. This raises the risk of hypertensive crisis and serotonin syndrome. Labeling contraindicates concurrent use.
What this interaction means in plain words
Phenelzine and Safinamide are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Phenelzine belongs to Central Nervous System; Safinamide belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive MAO inhibition leads to accumulation of monoamines.
What to do
Avoid; allow at least 14 days after stopping safinamide before starting phenelzine, and the reverse. Use another antidepressant or antiparkinson agent.
