Summary
Non-acetylated salicylates may blunt the blood pressure lowering effect of phentolamine because vasodilator prostaglandins contribute to the vasodilation. The clinical effect is generally modest and is mainly documented for NSAIDs as a class.
What this interaction means in plain words
Phentolamine and Salicylates have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Why it happens
Inhibition of vasodilatory prostaglandin synthesis may partly oppose alpha-blocker induced vasodilation.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure when salicylates are started or stopped in patients receiving phentolamine, and titrate phentolamine to response.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
