Both drugs may prolong the QT interval or provoke tachyarrhythmias, and beta-agonist related hypokalemia can further raise the risk of torsades de pointes. The risk is greatest with high doses, electrolyte disturbance or underlying cardiac disease.
What this interaction means in plain words
Pirbuterol and Ziprasidone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation, with beta-2 agonist induced hypokalemia increasing arrhythmic susceptibility.
What to do
Correct potassium and magnesium before and during therapy and consider ECG monitoring in patients with cardiac risk factors.
