Summary
Procarbazine is immunosuppressive, so the live rubella vaccine virus may replicate excessively and cause disseminated infection. Protective antibody response may also be poor.
What this interaction means in plain words
Procarbazine and Rubella vaccine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression impairs clearance of live attenuated virus and reduces vaccine immunogenicity.
What to do
Avoid live rubella vaccine during procarbazine treatment and delay it until at least about 3 months after therapy with immune recovery. Revaccinate later if needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
- If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
