Summary
Methylphenidate-type stimulants given with or shortly after an MAO inhibitor such as procarbazine can provoke severe hypertension and hypertensive crisis. This is a labeled contraindication for the stimulant.
What this interaction means in plain words
Procarbazine and Serdexmethylphenidate / dexmethylphenidate are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
MAO inhibition allows catecholamine accumulation while the stimulant increases norepinephrine and dopamine release.
What to do
Avoid concurrent use and for at least 14 days after stopping an MAOI before starting the stimulant. Use a non-interacting alternative.
