Summary

The live oral typhoid vaccine (Ty21a) can cause invasive infection in immunosuppressed patients, and the vaccine response may be poor. Procarbazine causes substantial immunosuppression.

What this interaction means in plain words

Procarbazine and Typhoid vaccine live are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression allows the live attenuated bacteria to persist and impairs immunity.

What to do

Avoid the live vaccine during therapy and for at least about 3 months afterwards. Use the inactivated injectable typhoid vaccine instead.
